OH YAY/CRAP - I’M HAVING A BABY!

PEEING ON A STICK:

Who knew that an otherwise mundane act could trigger a simultaneous landslide of excitement and terror?

For those of us on the solopreneur spectrum, maternity leave and work post-baby aren’t exactly pre-set-it-and-forget-it situations.

You need A Plan.

But.

How do you make a plan when you have no idea what’s coming?

Spoiler alert: Keep reading and I’ll tell you “what to do” instead of panicking…

I n t r o d u c i n g

BABY PROOF MY BUSINESS

A consulting + coaching service that sets you up with
a customized plan and practical strategies to prepare
for your next big gig: reproducing and raising wild things.

YOU NEED:

A PLAN THAT IS FLEXIBLE, AGILE, AND ROLLs WITH THE PUNCHES
OF WORKING AROUND A WEE PSYCHOTIC DICTATOR.

That Means:

  • Boundaries to protect your time and energy.

  • A business model with the flexibility to nap at will and work around eleventeen feeding sessions per day.

  • Pricing that accounts for your increased cost of operation (i.e. childcare) and the conviction to own your value.

  • Systems and processes that make sense for you and your wonderfully weird little family; ones that protect your time, energy, and the people you love most.

  • A strategy for keeping your finger on the pulse of your network without coming at the cost of time with your wee one. Or, let’s be honest. Yourself.

Don’t worry, my preggo friend. I get it.

I’ve been there, done that (twice!) and I have the stretch marks, sleep deprivation, and adult acne to prove it.

(Thanks for that one, hormones.)

So I’m here to tell you:

Don’t. freak. out.

There is a way to plan for the postpartum-pocalypse

More commonly known as weeks, months, and (let’s be honest) years following the arrival of a tiny, completely irrational human being, and its effect on your business and life.

I’m talking about the ‘hood.

M O T H E R H O O D .

Justine is ‘The Person I Wished Existed’ to help me with my business when I found out I was pregnant. She’s helped me get unstuck (when I was mightily stuck) and is a savvy, funny, down-to-earth ideas MACHINE. Her work is all about implementing healthy boundaries, taking care of yourself, and making the space to do big things as you navigate transitions (read: growth) in business and life.

I’m so grateful to her for seeing my messiness, and being so welcoming and supportive.

WORKING TOGETHER

THE CONSULTATION CALL

It’s just you and me, baby, on a video call. (Or I guess it’s you, me, and baby...) #DigitalGetDown

You unload all.of.the.things that are cluttering your mind and occupying your limited bandwidth.
I’ll be a strategic (and kind of sarcastic) sounding board, at-the-ready to make sense of the mess that is your pre-baby business.

The goal is to focus on what matters most, and have a plan in hand so you can stop stressing and sleep better at night. (Okay. No guarantees on the sleep…but I blame the baby for that one.)

“BUT WHAT WILL WE TALK ABOUT?”

I see 3 main stressors come up during maternity leave planning:

  • Knowing Your Numbers,

  • Keeping the biz going while you’re Obstetrically Occupied, and

  • The Fear of Being Forgotten.

FYI: We will work together to tackle one issue per Consultation (because, #Momotasking):

1. Know Your Numbers
(And Your Timelines)

How Much Money Should You save? how long can you TAKE PARENTAL leave?

Running your own show is a little bit different than having a job; the overhead doesn’t stop when you do, and (self)employee benefits are zero.

So. How are you supposed to know how much money to set aside, and when you can step away for a while?

2. Structure Your
B-I-Z to Support Y-O-U

Screen Shot 2018-10-16 at 1.12.10 PM.png

ExaminE Your Systems, pRocesses, and Service offerings

Your business may be keeping you up at night, but that’s about to change. Look at your processes and offerings, and make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to.

Spoiler alert: their job is to support you, not to stress you out.

3. Staying Relevant,
But Unattached

Make Sure Your Bizzle Doesn’t fizzle while you’re NURTURING LIFE

You’ve been running solo for so long, it’s hard to imagine that all of the blood, sweat and tears (literally) that you invested in your biz won’t have been in vain while you’re gone.

Head into baby-land with a plan(ish) to stay in touch(ish) with the people who matter, so you can rest(ish) easy.

Oh hey Expectant Friend, I’m Justine.

And I’m about to make your life a whole lot simpler.

I promise that you aren’t the first person to step away from your business baby to take care of a human one for a while, and that all three of you are going to be fine.

I am qualified to say that because in my 10+ years of self-employment and 5ish years of momming (2 boys + 2 dogs = as busy as you’d expect) I’ve learned a thing or two about the wild intersection of entrepreneurship and motherhood, and making sense of the madness.

My work is organic, non-linear, and all about uncovering + amplifying what you know to be true about yourself and your business.

I bring a sense of realness, honesty, and compassion to the work I deliver; the goal is never Instagram-quilt-perfection. I’m here to help you tap into + stay with the realness of this pocket, and embrace the messy imperfection that is life.

On your terms.

THE CONSULTATION INCLUDES:

A Questionnaire Extraordinaire to hone in on areas that need attention

60 min Strategy Session to dive into the details of your pre + postnatal planning

The first thing you should know about Justine: She’s incredibly intuitive. In just one 60 minute session, she was able to ask the right questions, listen intently, and then distill exactly where the greatest opportunities existed for me...effectively making clear, organized sense of my chaos and acting as a phenomenal sounding board in the process. What I love even more? She truly supports your whole self, understanding that being an entrepreneur isn’t just about the work.

As I’m gearing up for my maternity leave — the first time I’ve taken more than a week off from my business in the five years I’ve been running it! — I can confidently say I am feeling as prepared as one can for an unpredictable situation, and it’s solely because of Justine.

the Frequently Asked Qs

Do I have to be pregnant to work with you?

Nope. Baby-proofing, kid-proofing, or life-proofing…the same concepts apply.

Whether you’re in the maybe-baby mindset, you want to take time off to road trip with your fur baby, or invest in DIYing a greenhouse for your plant babies -- making a plan that takes into account YOUR vision, YOUR values, and YOUR unique way of being, while rolling with the punches of real life...that’s just smart.

I want to be sure we’re a good fit. Can we do a quick call first?

I hear you -- it’s good sense to vet someone before committing. If you want to learn more about me right now, here are a few ways to do that:

I wrote a piece on Medium called “Mommy Wine Culture: Do we have a problem?” (The subheading reads: I think we do, but the booze isn’t necessarily the issue.)

My sister-friend Ashley and I have a quarterly series on her podcast, Kilter & Mint, called Motherhood Unfiltered. In these episodes we talk about: our experiences transitioning to motherhood, work and establishing an identity outside of our kids, navigating things like privacy and consent with toddlers…and so much more. One time we chatted about nothing at all, but we had wine and did sheet masks so that was fun. Check it out!

I wrote a blog post called “I’m Tired Of Supposed To,” which captured the frustration I was feeling with the online marketing world, and shaped the philosophy that’s behind my consulting + coaching.

If you still have some Q’s and want to have a quick chit chat, here’s the link to book a Discovery Call.

Do you really like alliteration?

I do! I am also a fan of odd numbers, and 13 is my favourite (just like my best friend Taylor Swift.)

What if I have a question that isn’t answered here?

Feel free to shoot me an email, and I will do my best to provide an answer to your less frequently asked question.

PS. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY GLOWING AND NOT AT ALL RED-FACED OR A LITTLE SWEATY FROM THE WORK THAT IS GROWING A HUMAN.

PPS. You read this far. You might as well join my email list.
